I was originally diagnosed with a blighted ovum at 6 weeks...it was then confirmed via abdominal u/s at 8 weeks 2 days. I decided to miscarry naturally, mainly due to cost. DH and I have private insurance and have already spent almost $3000 on this pregnancy. I just can't see spending the money on something that my body will eventually do on its own.
I'm now 11 weeks 4 days and started bleeding on Thursday. I've had three previous m/s that were all pretty much the same. Pretty fast I started bleeding heavily and for a couple hours I cramped a lot. This time around I have periods of heavy cramping but the bleeding is very light, less than a light period, and there isn't any clotting.
For those that have had a natural m/s with a b/o is this normal? I'm worried that my body isn't taking care of it completely.
*Update* I've been bleeding on and off for almost two weeks now with pretty severe cramping. My doctor wanted another u/s to see what's going on and they saw the gestational sac is still in tact and growing. They said at this point, 13 weeks, I should really have a D&C.

Sorry you are going through this again. I had a D&C, so don't have any experience to share on natural miscarriage. My gut reaction is to say I would call my doctor if the bleeding does not progress more today or tomorrow. Maybe, it's just starting slowly? I would worry about infection if there's a problem with the tissue passing like it's supposed to. If you start getting a fever, I would call a doctor, since that could be a sign of infection starting.

With my last m/c, I had already had two previous D&Cs so elected to try it on my own - we also now have to pay out of pocket. My doctor said to call for a scan after I'd had 24 hours of bleeding so that they could be sure it was all passed. I was a bad patient and didn't. Two days later I ended up hemorrhaging and almost passed out. I had to go to the ER at 2 am and it was a horrible experience. I ended up having a d and c and instantly felt better. I'm facing the same situation again and I don't care the cost I will not be going natural again. Call your doctor!

First of all, I am so sorry for all your losses. It is not easy to deal with one, let alone four. So, I know it doesn't help much but I am sending big hugs your way. You will get thru this.
Every miscarriage, like every pregnancy, is going to be different. I had a D&C after my BO and a chem pg at 5 weeks that was more like a heavy period like you described with your previous losses. But from reading the stories of the women on this board and from talking to friends that have experienced losses, I don't think your experience is so unusual at the beginning. It could be that your levels are just taking longer to go down and that the bleeding you are experiencing now is just the start. Sort of like spotting. And, as your body continues to recognize that this baby is not viable, the bleeding will get more heavy. I was told at the time of my BO that a body can be "confused" by a BO for up to 14 weeks gestation because that is the stage at which the placenta normally would start taking over for feeding the baby completely. I realize you have waited several weeks to start miscarrying on your own and I can not imagine how difficult it is to just sit and wait - especially since you have already started bleeding. Our experiences, as you know, shape our reactions so while, in general, I am a proponent of calling a doctor like psalm suggested above, but also, having not had her experience with hemorrhaging, I also would probably be hesitant to call the doc if I was in your shoes. But, in reading your history, in all honesty, the fact that you have been bleeding lightly for several days but have had heavy cramping does make me concerned. And I'm not sure how long is "long enough" to wait for the bleeding to increase. It sounds like you've been bleeding lightly now for several days so I don't see the harm in calling the doctor for advice.
One thought is that there are some non-surgical options too. Your doctor could prescribe you misoprostol (sp?) which can speed up the miscarriage and, I assume, costs signficantly less than a D&C though I'm not exactly sure of the cost. I know lots of women on this site have used that with good results. Is there a way you can talk to your doctor or nurse without having to go in for an appointment??
Take care of yourself. We're here if you need us, Marisa

I am so sorry you are going through this. Like you, I had 4 miscarriages before I concieved my daughter. With my second m/c I started bleeding lightly for a week before the diagnosis of BO was confirmed. Ironically, the day it was diagnosed (at 9 weeks), that night I started bleeding heavier and started cramping... and actually miscarried late that night. The fact that you have been bleeding for a few days isn't abnormal, the periods of cramping can also be normal. I would give it a few more days. If you still have not passed any clots by say Wednesday, you may want to call your doctor. If nothing else, talk to them by phone and let them know what is happening. As Marissa mentioned, they may want to give you a medication to help your body with the miscarriage process, or they may want to do another ultrasound to check contents of your uterus.
What you do is up to you, just please know that we are here for you and that you have found a site full of support and women who understand what you are going through.
Hugs, Alisha

I'm am so sorry that you are going through this difficult time. Please know that you have found a group of very supportive and caring women. We are here for you every step of the way and do our best to help you.
I had a d/c but started to miscarry on the day of the d/c. I had some slight bleeding in the days preceding that, but heavier cramping and bleeding that morning before the procedure. I don't think that it would hurt to call your dr. and let them know what is happening. Every body will respond differently and they may decide, as others have said, to give you something to help.
Please let us know how you are doing.
Tight hugs~ Leah

Thanks for all of the support. The bleeding is still pretty light without clotting but last night I did pass something (not a clot but looked like a small piece of liver). Today the bleeding is still very light but I'm more hopeful now that I've passed something. My doctor will be closed for Mardi Gras tomorrow but I'm going to call Wed. just to checkif this is normal.

Just keep a close eye on it, because that's how my miscarriage started out when I hemmoraged. It was pretty light for a few days, which meant my body wouldn't let go, then I started bleeding super heavy when half of the placenta broke loose. I lost almost half my blood and had to have an emergency D&C. It was nothing like the first m/c I had where it all happened rather quickly once I started bleeding. Have you called your DR? I hope you are able to heal soon! So sorry for your loss! Hugs & prayers!
~Hannah~

Another thought, is that your body may be reabsorbing the BO. I have heard that this can happen. In which case there is probably less fetal material to pass. I hope everything is ok. Let us know if you need anything! -Marisa
