I am not sure what I should do next.
I went for an US when I was 6w3d pregnant and there was no fetal pole. The gestational sac was measured at 6 weeks. My doctor asked me to come back in two weeks. Two weeks later (4/28/10) I had my US and the technician did not tell me much when I asked her questions and told me she will get a doctor to speak with me. A doctor who I have never met before came in and told me that she had bad news for me and I have three options: D&C, let it happen naturally or taking a pill. I told her I will let it happen naturally then. She spent five minutes speaking with and told me that I can schedule for another appointment on Monday to talk more about it (5/3/10) as she was busy for the rest of the week. She did not use the term blighted ovum. She did not tell me much. I had to ask her about my blood test results from two weeks ago and she said that it’s not in the file she will have to go look for them. She told me I will need to do a blood test to make sure that I can wait to MC naturally. At that point I was in shock and confused. I had many questions but she seemed too busy to really explain what is happening to me.
She walked me to the area for the blood test and asked the technician for my blood test results from two weeks ago. I asked her about the HCG level two weeks ago and she said they were really good. I asked her about the size of the gestational sac and she told it’s 8 weeks which is in line with my LMP. Then I asked her is it possible to see a fetal pole after 8 weeks and she said yes but she does not want to give me false hope.
Should she have done any other tests to confirm the MC? I don’t know what to ask or what to expect? She seems so sure. I guess not having her explain to me how she arrived at the diagnosis made me feel unsure about it. I did not see the US picture. Is this the end for me?
Thanks in advance for answering my question.

I'm sorry you are going through this. A large part of me says maybe a second opinion would be good. Or maybe being really bold with your dr. to get answers.

First of all, I am sorry for the uncertainty you are going through, and that you have not gotten the answers you need from your doctor. At this point, I think it's good you are waiting things out. I would not proceed with any form of intervention like a D&C or medications to induce miscarriage until having at least one more US.
I will tell you that honestly, I would expect to be seeing a fetal pole and a little more at 8 weeks, especially if the sac is measuring that size, and you are pretty certain of your dates. Your doctor may have based the diagnosis on you having a certain size sac with no visible fetal pole-- there are measurements for that which some consider diagnostic for BO. But, there are those few stories out there of babies that were missed on US, so I would definitely want more confirmation. I don't know if I would ask for more hcg levels... I guess that would show if your numbers are still increasing, or if they have tapered off some.
There really isn't any harm in waiting things out a bit longer. I would definitely ask for another US if you do not start miscarrying naturally within a week or 2. Things do become clearer on US as time goes on.

I'm so sorry for this difficult and uncertain time that you are going through. Please know that we are all here for you every step of the way.
I definitely think that if you are at all uncertain, you should get a second opinion. Blood tests and u/s are the typical ways of identifying a BO. My BO was confirmed with both blood work and an u/s.
I hope that you are able to find some answers.
Hugs~

Thanks everyone for your advices!!
I am going to try to make an appointment for a second opinion. Should I ask for a blood test even if another doctor confirms it with the US?
I am kind of numb right now. I hope everything will work out OK...but in a sense I am expecting the worst.

I would wait to see what the US shows-- if it's a BO, at some point, the sac will stop growing and start to break down. Hcg levels may not be necessary if that is happening.
Some women have had really high hcg levels with their BOs, which can make it take longer to start miscarrying. With my BO, my hcg levels were only in the 900s, and I miscarried pretty early on, just before 7 weeks.
I also hope everything works out for you. I would hold onto hope until you have a clear answer.

My HCG levels were high with my BO even at 12 wks. I am not sure I would have m/c naturally without waiting a long time. I would not take any action though until until YOU are certain the diagnosis is rght. It would be horrible to get a D&C or something and have doubts after.

I am sorry that your doctor was not very helpful. That is a shame. I agree that you should definitely seek a second opinion. Also, like Lisa, my HCG levels were still quite high when I had my BO at ten weeks. My doctor highly recommended a d and c because at ten weeks, my body was not miscarrying.
I hope you get the answers you need. Keep us updated.

I also am so sorry you are going through this. We have all been there, unfortunately.
My story is pretty similar to yours. My HCGs were elevated but at 6wk and then 8wks too. The u/s showed a gestational sac measuring to dates but no fetal pole. The doctors told me there was no chance that a baby would grow. And, my doctor told me that my body could keep on thinking I was pg for up to 14 weeks. For me, I could not stand the idea of waiting up to 6 weeks to m/c on my own. So I had a D&C. But every pg is different and every woman is different. You need to do what feels right in your heart.
Good luck and take care of yourself. We are always here if you need us. This is an amazing site for support and friendship.
Hugs, Marisa

I have been trying to find another doctor for second opinion and could not find any soon enough. Today I went back to the doctor that diagnosed me with miscarriage with my husband and we got more information. During my last US, they did find a fetal pole. However is was two weeks behind (it was supposed to be 8 weeks, and it measured only 6 weeks) and there was no heart beat. I asked about the blood test during the last visit and again she had to go and pull the results and she said the number went up but not by a lot. My husband asked for another US on Wednesday before we decide whether to MC naturally or take the medication as there has been no cramping or bleeding in the past two weeks. Do you think there is a chance that the technician can find the heart beat on Wednesday? I just got back from the dr office, so my mind is just kind of blank now.

I think it's good you are having another US before making your decision. If there has been no further development and there continues to be no heartbeat, then that will confirm that your little one stopped developing at some point. I will admit that it doesn't sound very promising for finding a HB at this point, but I think it's important to get all the confirmation you need to be sure.
Others on here have often mentioned the risks of miscarrying naturally as you get further along-- specifically the risk of heavy bleeding. If your US does not go well, you may want to ask about that. If your hcg levels remain relatively high, it could take awhile for a natural miscarriage to start.
I'm so sorry you are going through this. I hope your US on Wednesday gives you the answers you need.
