Hello. I am new to the board. I just found out at my 8 wk u/s that I have a blighted ovum. I am considering having a natural miscarriage and would like to hear from some members that have chosen that route.
A couple of questions I have are: 1) What was your experience like? 2) What could you do for yourself to help during the process (pain medication, hot water bottle, etc.)? 3) How do you know if you have had a complete or incomplete miscarriage?
I read Gobigred's story and am curious to know why you ended up having a D&C while trying to have a natural miscarriage.
This is my first miscarriage. Thank you for all your support!

I am so sorry that you had to find us but glad that seeing you are going through this you will have the support and info that you need.
1) What was your experience like? I started spotting and then cramping. For me it was like a heavy af and the cramping was really heavy cramping worse than af but not quite as bad as labor pains. I found out I was having a b/o when I went to the er for cramping & spotting. They did and u/s and all they saw was an empty sac that was collapsing. I did have clots and tissue, but for me it was not that bad.
2) What could you do for yourself to help during the process (pain medication, hot water bottle, etc.)? I could take anything over the counter and use a hot water bottle. I took Tylenol and then alleve when that didn't work.
3) How do you know if you have had a complete or incomplete miscarriage? I went in for follow up hcg levels and a follow up u/s to make sure that all was clear.
I hope that whatever your decision and whatever happens it goes quickly so you can start having closure and healing.
Take care (((((hugs))))))

Beaulah, I wanted to ask a question before I posted an answer to your question. I am also new here and have seen people talk about having a "natural miscarriage" and wondered when you say your considering that option if you mean that your just going to wait for your body to go through the miscarriage process or if your going to take medication to induce the miscarriage process. I myself took medication to cause my body to miscarry. So I didn't want to give details of that if that isn't the information that your looking for. Whatever you decide, I wish you well and I hope that you find comfort here the way that so many of us have! Take Care! Heather

hlam,
Yes, I'd prefer to miscarry without any drugs. However, if that doesn't work I would consider drugs. The doc gave me a cytotec to take before the D&C. I checked the FDA info and it is approved for gastric ulcers.
Please let me know your story also as I may go that route. Thanks!

Beaulah:
I am sorry that you are having to go through this. I decided to have the d&c because after waiting two weeks I was ready for it to be over, plus my doc recommened that I not wait any longer as an u/s showed that nothing had changed/moved in 7 days. I originally waited because I wanted to ttc asap and thought if I miscarried naturally I could start sooner. It turns out my doc said even after my d&c that I only had to wait for one normal cycle. All in all, I am glad I had the d&c, as I did get some closure with it. I experienced no pain with it, just took it easy for a couple of days after. I was surprised that I bled for 3 1/2 wks. after! I just finished bleeding last Sat. So, there is that constant reminder of what happened, but I think you would bleed after a miscarriage as well (not sure about this). This whole thing has really sucked, emotionally and financially! I can honesly say I fell like I am at a point where I can put it behind me and get excited about ttc in the future. Just curious, was this your first pregnancy? I highly recommend posting on this board. Great info and wonderful support. Best of luck to you.
Nancy

I'm not sure what the drug that I took was actually called. However I believe that it was also for ulcers. I had a total of 8 pills that I had to take......2 at a time every 4 hours vaginally. I started bleeding within 45 minutes of taking the first dose. I had also been given a prescription for Percocet and Ibuprophen to take for pain and another prescription to control bleeding. (still wondering how much that one worked) For several hours I didn't have any pain or substantial bleeding. I pretty much carried on with life as usual. However, about 3rd dose in the bleeding picked up quite a bit and I started to get really uncomfortable cramping. I had been instructed to collect the tissue when I passed it so that they could test it and make sure that I'd passed it all. So I spent most of the night searching for this tissue. I can tell you that wasn't necessary. I passed a lot of blood clots and I mean a lot.....20 or 30 at a time and one that was bigger although flatter than a softball. I ended up bleeding so much that I was soaking pads almost as fast as I was changing them. I started feeling really uncomfortable and to be honest it felt like labor. I was bleeding so much that when I stood up I felt like I was going to pass out and this happened to me several times in the last couple of hours. I ended up having to move to the bathtub because I couldn't control the bleeding anymore. Eventually, I passed the tissue and almost instantly and I do mean instantly the bleeding and the pain stopped. Now I did have bleeding off and on for a few weeks but it's was very little. From start to finish this process took me about 21 hours. I lost so much blood that I had to take iron for 12 weeks because I was Anemic. I know that this is very graphic and probably not what you were hoping to read. I had thought about not telling it because I don't like to make things worse than they are. However, I wish someone would have told me what to expect because i was worried about whether or not what I was going through was normal. I was afraid to risk the D & C eventhough I know that the risk is very minimal. I'm just more the type that likes to deal with things in privacy. Plus for my own peace of mind, I needed to "see" that the pregnancy wasn't viable. Well, I know that this probably isn't what you wanted to hear. It really wasn't as awful as it sounds because the worst part was at the end. Do what you feel is best for you. I wish you the best with your decision. Take Care, Heather

Hello Beaulah,
I had a D&E with both my miscarriages. So I can't help with natural m/c, my body didn't want to do it on its own, and I was OK with the surgical route. I didn't want to wait weeks and weeks, and my surgeries were successful and practically pain free. I just wanted to add that I am very sorry this is happening to you and hope you can find comfort with our special group of ladies. It has helped me tremendously to have people to talk about my losses with.
Big HUGS
Kris

Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences with me. Nancy, yes this is my first pregnancy. I am 40 years old and have PCOS.
I spoke with my doctor yesterday and she suggested a maximum two weeks to see if the m/c occurs naturally. If it doesn't then I will go in for a D&C. I won't use any medication to induce the m/c but the doc gave me a Rx for Vicodin to help out with the pain.
Thank you all again. I know that each of our bodies reacts differently but you've really helped me to make a more informed decision.
