So, here is my long story short to see if you gals think what I have going on is a BO or something else entirely: I have been TTC for 1.5 years now (I'm 31, DH is 30). We are going to a fertility clinic and paying 100% out of pocket. After 4 rounds of IUI with injections, I finally got my positive. My day 14 HCG was 95, my day 16 HCG was 215. Since it had doubled nicely, they did no more labs and scheduled me for a 7 week U/S. Yesterday was 7 weeks 1 day. They did an ultrasound and to my absolute horror found my uterus "empty". The then drew labs and since my HCG was 600, decided I needed to go to the hospital to be checked out for ectopic. Well, after a 2 hours transvaginal and abdominal ultrasound, no ectopic was seen. I was not given and real answers, just told that if me HCG doesn't go down the MD would have to "take action". Does this sound like a BO? Where is/was the baby? Why do I still have HCG of 600 if there is nothing anywhere? I am just at a loss....Help....

Hi! So sorry you are going through this! It sounds to me like it may be an ectopic. Did they find any signs of conception in the uterus at all? I had an ectopic last year and my numbers were similar to yours, but they were never able to find anything in the tubes until after my numbers reached over 1,000. It's possible you could have implanted late also. I would go back to the Dr and demand answers. Thats what I had to do to get my ectopic diagnosed. I will be praying for you! Update when you can!

I completely agree with Hannah I would push for more testing. The last thing you need is an ectopic that bursts. It could also be the sac was reabsorbed they call it a chemical pg. I had a pig where I tested positive my numbers went up nice then started to go down but I had two us that found nothing inside so they told me that my body had probably reabsorbed the " products of conception" (I hate that sentence by the way). I am so sorry for your loss please keep us updated. (((HUGS)))

Well, today my HCG is up from 600 to almost 1000. They are recommending a D&C. I was pretty thoroughly checked for an ectopic. I had an u/s at my RE's office, and then an extensive one at a hospital where they checked transvaginally and abdominally. I am having no pain. I just am confused-how/why would they do a D&C if the uterus is empty? I am so so so devastated.

Like I said, I was checked thoroughly (4 different vaginal ultrasounds to be exact), and nothing was seen in the tubes or uterus. When my numbers reached over 1,000, thats when they finally could visualize the baby in my tube, but even then the u/s tech had to do a lot of pushing around to be able to find the baby, and by then I was already 8 weeks. I wouldn't let them give you a D&C unless some definite products of conception are found in the uterus. If your numbers are going up, then something is growing somewhere...you need to demand another u/s. Even if it's a blighted ovum, they should at least see a gestational sac in the uterus. I did have off and on pain and spotting with my ectopic, but some women never have pain until the tube actually bursts. I will be praying you get answers soon! So sorry you are going through this uncertainty! Hugs and prayers!

Thank you, angel. I called another office today (my regular OB, not the RE) and am waiting for a call back. I want a second opinion.

I'm glad you are getting a second opinion! I was seen in two different ERs and seen by 4 different doctors before i actually got my diagnosis. It shouldn't be so difficult to find out what is going on, but unfortunately it is sometimes:( I hope you can get some answers very soon! Keep me posted!

Ok, well the on-call MD at my regular OB office says for SURE no D&C or other invasive procedures until it is confirmed WHERE the embryo is. I feel so much better. Interestingly, my RE office called to SCHEDULE my D&C right after I spoke to my OB office. Two very different opinions on what I need to do, but I 100% agree with my OB office. So, I will get labs redrawn tomorrow. At a HCG of 1000, they should be able to see where it is and then they will plan from there. I am really hoping to avoid any sort of surgical procedure if I can. However, to complicate the issue, my DH and I are leaving the country on Dec 12, so I hope everything is "taken care of" by then. I do not want to be hemorrhaging in Mexico!

Oh good, I like that opinion much better. I can't believe they would want to do a D&C with out finding out where the pregnancy is! I really hope it's not an ectopic, but if it is, it might be early enough to her the methotrexate shot and not have your tube removed. Definitely let us know!

Angel, I just read that if you have to get the methotrexate shot you can not TTC for 6 months! Is that true?! And if it is ectopic is that my only option? I for sure don't want to lose my tube, but I also don't want to sit out 6 months!

Well my beta just came back at 1596. Ugh what does that mean? Is this "product of conception" growing? I am so confused. Why is this happening? I just want this to be done with

I was kind of glad I wasn't a cantidate for the Methotrexate shot because of that reason. It's a pretty harsh drug and I'm pretty sure you do have to wait a while before you try again. Another option if you have an ectopic is to get the tube repaired. The dr asked me if I had the option of saving the tube would I want to, and I chose not to. I did not want to have scar tissue and end up with another ectopic. But i did tell the Dr I would leave the final decision up to her discrection. When they did my surgery, my tube ended up having to come out anyway because it was so badly damaged.
I was worried about being able to conceive again, because I read stories online of women trying for years with only one tube. Thankfully I was able to conceive after 3 short months of trying!
When is your next ultrasound scheduled for? I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this:(

Thanks for your email. I might be writing you depending on what tomorrow brings. I have another U/S scheduled for tomorrow. At this point I would almost be 9 weeks and wouldn't "normally" have even had an ultrasound yet, so I guess at least i only went 7 weeks thinking I was pregnant instead of the full 12 (which is when my first OB appoint was scheduled). I will report back tomorrow.

Well I will be praying that this is not an ectopic, and thet they will find something in the uterus on the ultrasound so you can move on. It would be so much easier to deal with if you can get a D&C, rather than surgery to remove a tube. I will be checking back to hear the results! Hugs and prayers!!

Hey all. I am doing well. In fact, I feel great, always have, so it makes it that much more weird. My US yesterday still showed and empty uterus and no evidence of ectopic. Since my HCG is still higher (>1500 and rising) they know it has to be SOMEWHERE. So I had to go to the ER tonight (my Dr's office was closed so they couldn't give it to me) and get methotrexate. Do any of you ladies know how long it will take for the bleeding to start? I leave for Mexico on December 12th-should I cancel? The MD thought i might have to. Everything is non refundable so I would lose about $2,000. I am just so upset and it just keeps getting worse. Not only do I not have a baby anymore but now my vacation we've saved for a planned for over a year is probably ruined too. I know that sounds shallow, but looking forward to a vacation is about the only thing thats kept me going.

Oh my I'm sooo sorry!! That is just so crazy that they couldnt find anything! Have you ever heard of an abdominal pregnancy? That is the only thing I can think that it might be! I'm so sorry! Honestly, I would still go on your trip as planned even if you haven't started bleeding by then, or are bleeding at the time. There is a slight risk of hemmorage with any miscarriage, but since you don't have a placenta attached in the uterus, maybe that won't be an issue?? This is just so baffling! I wish I knew more about the shot so I could be more helpful! Did they say how long you had to wait to conceive?

I took a pill to mc I would think it works the same but I am not sure. It was bad for about 12 hrs. And after 24 the worst was over. The only thing that would worry me is the fact they don't know where the pg is otherwise I would say take your holiday and enjoy. Maybe check with your regular dr. to be sure it is safe. I am so very sorry for your loss. It always hurts when someone new has to find us but I am glad we can be there. (((HUGS)))

I know, it is so weird. Since the terus is empty, they said they "assume" its ectopic. Yes, I have heard of abdominal pregnancies, so maybe it is that. I have no freaking idea. I slept for 11 hours last night-I guess methotrexate makes you super sleepy ?? I don't know what to do with my vacation. I was planning on bringing 5 swimsuits and 5 coverups and that's it. Well, if I'm bleeding that of course means no swimming, bathing suits, long day hikes, day out on the catamaran, etc. I mean, where they heck do you change your pad in the middle of an ocean or jungle? FML.

I went to Playa Del Carmen last year, and I had the bad fortune of starting my period on the plane ride there. It was a pretty heavy one too. I would suggest getting a menstral cup. I used the ones called "instead". They are disposable and hold quite a bit of blood. It's a little gross reaching in an pulling it out, but it really is worth it! It never leaked once! I swam with the dolphins, snorkled, lounged in the pool ect... I wasn't about to let my period put a damper on my trip! I know a miscarriage is a lot different than a period, but even if you have to lay by the pool, it would be better than staying home. The sunshine will be good for you. I will be praying that you start very soon so you will have a worry-free vacation!

Angel- Great thinking. I actually have some of those. I'd read they were good for TTC, so I bought a box. I would have never thought of using them for their actual use! Thanks. So far nothing-no bleeding or cramping even...?

Glad I could help! I think its normal not to be bleeding yet. I saw this site and it seemed to have a lot of good info on methotrexate. Like your levels might not start dropping until 4 days after the shot. And also, don't take your vitamins because the purpose of the shot is to decrease your folate absorption, so the cells will stop growing. www.ectopic.org.uk/index.php/patients/treatment/medical-treatment-methotrexate/
