Hi, sorry to gatecrash on the boards but I am looking for advice.
2 weeks ago I was thrilled to get a positive pregnancy test. Going by my dates I was somewhere between 6 and 8 weeks and expecting my 3rd child. Handed sample in to GP only to come back negative (I had done 4 hpt by this point all positive). He called me in to take bloods to confirm the pregnancy as my thyroid medication would need increasing. Bloods came back positive but low so had to repeat after 48 hours. Thursday pm the hospital called to say my hormone levels had now dropped to impending miscarriage levels. I was given no further information about what would happen. I started to bleed that night and on Friday (23rd Dec) started to bleed reasonably heavily and also passing some large almost black clots. I had really bad cramps. Over christmas eve the bleeding settled into a period like bleed which has now stopped. I am feeling very tired and quite cold and cramps not stopped and my boobs are still a bit sore. Is this normal? How do I know if I have passed all of the pregnancy? When should these symptoms stop? I also have rhesus negative blood, do I need an anti - D injection?
I have called the maternity unit at the hospital and noone will talk to me (I guess it is because it is xmas holidays). They just keep telling me to go to emergency but I really dont think that is necessary and I don't feel I could deal with waiting for hours as they would deem me not to be an urgent case.
I really want to get to the end of these physical symptoms so that I can concentrate on feeling better and more like myself again. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I am sorry for what you are going through. I lost my 3rd pregnancy due to blighted ovum at 13.5 weeks....and it was heartbreaking. I had to take medication to induce my miscarriage because my body wasn't letting the pregnancy go so once I had passed the "products of conception" I had to collect it and turn it in to my doctor to be tested to make sure that I had passed everything. I know it takes time for your hormone levels to go back to zero and you can experience symptoms until that occurs. I would guess that your doctor would continue to check your level until it reaches zero but I'm not positive. Hopefully someone else here can help you better. Again, I'm very sorry for what you are going through and just give yourself and your body the time needed to heal.
Hugs!

I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope you are able to get answers to all your questions soon. When will you be able to go see your regular OB? Im not sure about the RH thing, but as long as your bleeding isn't super heavy, I wouldn't worry about retaining tissue. I had a B/O exactly 1 year ago, and part of the placenta stayed attached, and I started to bleed out rather quickly. Thank God I was already in the hospital visiting my sis, because I wouldn't have made it otherwise. Just remember it's going to take a while to feel back to normal, and for your hormone levels to go down. If you get a fever or start soaking more than a pad an hour, I would go in ASAP! Well, keep us updated! Hugs & Prayers!

I am so sorry you had to find us. I am not rh- but my stepmother is and I am not 100% but I think she had to have a shot of RhoGam after her loss. I am not sure why but definately something I would call your Dr. about as soon as you can. Most women pass all the tissue without any problems and the earlier the m/c the lower the chances of complication. My best guess would be as long as you are not bleeding exremely heavy (soaking a pad in an hour or less like Hannah said) or you do not have a fever I would assume your body is doing what it needs to. Unfortunately pg symptoms can take a while to go away, with my early losses they dissapeared within a week but with my losses that I was farther along it took weeks. While typing this I searched the net and found this page on rh- and m/c and it sounds like what my stepmom told me when she had her loss miscarriage.about.com/od/immediatemedicalconcerns/f/rhnegative.htm . Is there a nurse on duty at your Dr. that you can speak to if your own dr. is not available? The site and my memory of my stepmoms experience is that the shot must be given close to the loss or there can be problems with future pgs. Feel free to post anytime you need us. Don't feel like you are "gatecrashing" although the board was formed for women with blighted ovums it is open to any woman experiencing a loss. Many of us have had more that one type of m/c. The main goal of the group is to provide support for a loss so you are more than welcome to come to us whenever you need to. We are all here for you. Take care and please keep us updated on how you are doing. (((HUGS)))

Thank you ladies for your replies. I have since spoken to the hospital and the maternity unit and they have confirmed that I do not need an injection for the rhesus negative blood as I was definately under 12 weeks. Everything else physically seems to be fine and from what I have read on the boards here, the actual process seems to have been pretty easy on my body.
As for emotionally, I am doing ok. I have sad times and crazy times which I expect you have all been through, but I am getting there. Fantastic support from my dh and wonderful friend and from you lovely ladies. We have decided to give it a couple of months before beginning to try again. Will be back to let you all know how we get on.
Thanks again,
Sarah x

Glad to hear that you didn't need the shot and that you're healing physically. The emotional side of things will be up and down for awhile to come but it sounds like you've got a good support system and are well on your way.
I look forward to seeing your updates in the future. Good Luck to you!!!!

So sorry for your loss. It is strange to hear so many conflicting things from doctors and not be able to get information. I had to switch doctors since I felt like no one was answering me and it just kept dragging on. I had a heavy miscarriage and ended up in the ER, but then had bleeding for almost 2 months after. My doctor never followed up with me and I didn't know better. From what my new doctor said, who performed a D&C as I had retained tissue, the bleeding should not last more than a week or 2. They made me get an RH shot when the miscarriage started, and again when I had the D&C two months later. It has been very frustrating to feel like sometimes the doctors are acting more in the interest of money than what is best for the patient. My first doctor did not recommend a D&C at first, but prescribed progesterone for 10 days to try to get my body to naturally expel what was left. The new doctor said that the ER could have done a thorough D&C at the very start. I don't know what to believe, but 2 months of stress was not exactly great. I hope that things work themselves out naturally for you and you are on the road to recovery soon.
