Hello, sad to be on this site, but I'm thinking and praying for you all. So my husband and I found out we were expecting on 6/3/12, with a LMP 5/10/12. I had pre-term labor with our son, so we started monitoring right away. I had great hcg's, which even had us thinking multiples. I went for an ultrasound on 5/18 (5w4d) which showed an empty sac (hcg 20,000!!). Dr. said likely BO. I thought this was a little early to jump to this conclusion. However...HCG 5/20-27,000 and 5/22-34,000. US on 5/22 (6w1d) again empty sac. So this progression is certainly leaving me with little to no hope I would like to believe in miracles, but I'm also realistic. Has anyone else had a similar situation?? I go for one last ultrasound on 6/28 and if nothing is seen, then a D&C the following day.

I'm sorry you are going through this uncertain time. I had a similar situation where we saw a small empty sac at 5 weeks, then at 6 weeks the sac was still empty and it had actually shrunk in size. There was also a significant bleed around the sac. The radiologist who reviewed the u/s came in and told us it was definitely a failed pregnancy. I went to my OB to schedule a D&C, and he convinced us to wait one more week before we got the procedure done. Sure enough one week later at 7 wks 2days there was a perfect beating heart! Our little Hallie Jane is now 7 weeks and as perfect as can be! I wouldn't lose hope yet. I have had it go both ways, as I have had 2 blighted ovums, one chemical and an ectopic. Either way, it won't hurt to have hope and try to enjoy the pregnancy a best as you can. I will be keeping you in my prayers and will look for updates!

I want to also mention that I had very low progesterone and my numbers were slow rising and never really doubled. My Dr said that was ok, and he was right. I wouldn't read too much into the numbers.

I'm sorry you are going through this. No matter what your hcg level is, it still takes the baby a certain amount of days to develop the fetal pole and HB. You had your US very early-- your 5w 4 d US sounds like it was on track. The 6 w 1 d one, it still would have been a stretch to see the baby. That's right near the earliest time some women see a HB, and some don't see it until to closer to 7 weeks. I am not comfortable with women having D&C's so early, especially with dating based only on LMP. I know there are situations when people do know exactly when they conceived, but more often, women can't be 100% certain. Conceiving later than you might think obviously makes the baby seem less developed than it should be, when it really is right on track.
I do remember one woman on here who had really high hcgs and ended up having a BO (she actually got pregnant again right after her miscarriage, before having a period, and had a successful pregnancy). However, I remember far more women who thought they had a BO based on early US and ended up having healthy pregnancies. If you don't see any progress in your next US, that starts to be concerning. However, I personally would not rush yet into a D&C unless there were obvious signs the sac was breaking down. A D&C is not reversible, and I think it is very important to get all the confirmation you need so you won't be haunted by doubts in the future.
I will hold onto hope that you get good news on 6/28.

Update: I had some issues yesterday leading me think that the miscarriage I expected was happening. My OB had me come to the ER, and from there we would do the D&C. He did a quick ultrasound to confirm the empty sac and there was a baby with a beating heart. I was 6w4d with a hcg of 57,000 the first time we were able to see the baby!! Baby measured right on with a heartbeat of 120. So your comments were right on with waiting. I know not all suspected BO's will have a happy ending The discharge and mild cramping has not returned since yesterday afternoon. I'm keeping this pregnancy in the hands of the Lord as I did when we thought we might lose this baby. I wish you all the best of luck. This is a great site and served as a great reference for me! Thank You!

So happy for you. My son did not show up until almost 7 wks. In wish dr.s would hold their horses before they say mc. Not many women see a hb before 6 wks. Congrats! Crossing everything I can for a happy and healthy pg.

I am new to this site. I was just told yesterday that I have a BO. I should be 7 weeks 5 days and pretty sure of my conception date. They did not see anything in the gestation sac. no yold sac or fetal pole and said my ovaries did not look like they were doing much to support the pregnancy? My HGC's over the last week were 3700, 5100 and 5523. I lost all symptoms of my pregnancy in the last two weeks and had mild spotting last week. I am pretty sure they are right on the diagnosis of the BO and now am trying to decide if I should wait for a natural miscarriage or schedule a D and C and am conflicted and scared. any words of advice, thanks
