D and C stands for Dilation and Curettage.
Dialation and curettage is commonly performed following miscarriage or abortion in cases where the uterus fails to fully eliminate it's contents. This is usually performed in a hospital setting using general anesthesia. An injection is given around the cervix tol minimize the pain and discomfort associated with the procedure.
A speculum is inserted into the vagina to open the walls so the doctor can see the cervix. The cervix is dialaged and a curette is used to scrape the uterine walls.
There may be discomfort from the anesthesia, which may result in vomiting or nausea. Some will experience a sore throat that can last a few days. Many will report mild cramping for a few days, and experience spotting or bleeding. AF should return within 6 weeks. The main risk involved is perforation of the uterine wall, although this is rare, happens in about 4% of all cases.
